Riding Mill is home to Northumberia Water's Water Treatment Works and pumping station. The pumping station is a vital element of the Kielder Water Transfer Scheme. It pumps water up the 4 mile pumping main all the way to Letch House and on to Airy Holm Reservoir.

It is not clear how often the pumping station is used, however, we do know that it is used on an annual basis to perform a fit test if you'd like of the entire transfer system.

Back in January 2019, it was announced that there was going to be a 12 million pound investment in facilities at the pumping station, which included replacing the 4 pumps and upgrading electrical supplies.
